Formed in 2006, The Anna Rennie Women's Chapter of the Port Adelaide Enfield Chamber of Commerce was named in honour of the late Anna Moir Rennie – a truly inspiring local woman. Anna Rennie was our state's first female Councillor, elected in 1950 and serving on the Port Council for 19 years, the last 5 as Mayor. A thoroughly generous woman, Anna had previously worked tirelessly on the Port's food ration scheme and often took homeless families into her own home. Women and families always high on her agenda, Anna never gave up her campaigning, even when more traditionally minded councillors way-laid her plans. Through pure strength of will and determination, she supported many community development projects including Australia's first Meals on Wheels kitchen, a large kindergarten, and promoted the sale of prime un-used land to the Housing Trust for homeless people affected by WW II and the post-war Depression. Anna was not a wealthy woman, was not engaged in paid work nor did she run a business. She did, however, forge strong relationships with the local business people because of her genuine community spirit and ability to roll-up her sleeves and get things done. Despite living in a humble house in Port Adelaide, Anna took great pride in her personal presentation and carried herself with dignity. It is in the spirit of Anna Rennie that the Chapter has been established.
